Brecon is a stone-built cathedral town where the Usk meets the canal, with Bannau Brycheiniog close by, and it has the kind of large gardens that grow big trees. Orchard apples, old ornamentals and boundary trees all need looking after. We carry out pruning and crown reduction, thin out congested growth and take off deadwood, so each tree stays healthy and balanced.
Our work ranges from a single fruit tree behind a town house to a row of mature trees along a field boundary on the edge of town. Either way we start by looking at what the tree is doing and what it needs.

Gardens around Brecon often have the space for trees to reach full size, and that is both a blessing and a job of work for anyone looking after them. Left alone, branches grow long, cross and break, and the crown becomes heavy on one side. Careful pruning shortens the longest limbs back to good side branches and keeps the overall shape pleasing and well balanced, which also reduces the chance of heavy limbs splitting.
Boundary trees by fields and lanes need a slightly different approach, because the branches are often long and reach over fences, walls or paths. We cut those back cleanly so the tree is easier to live with, while keeping as much of its natural character as we can, so it still looks like part of the landscape. Nothing is cut without a purpose, and we explain our plan first.

Fruit trees in a Brecon garden reward good pruning. Thinning the crown to let light reach the middle, removing dead or tangled wood and keeping a manageable height all make the tree easier to look after. We prune at a suitable time for the species, which for many trees is winter in this part of Powys, when the tree is dormant and the shape is clear.
Ornamental trees and conifers need their own treatment. Ornamentals usually need a light touch, whereas fir and other conifers will not regrow from old bare wood, so we reduce them only within the green growth. If a conifer has been neglected for too long, we will tell you plainly and talk through the choices open to you, from gentle shaping to replanting.
Birds use the hedgerows and trees all around Brecon, so we avoid the nesting season wherever possible and plan around it. We clear up the cuttings, and we can leave logs if you want them. Just let us know how to reach the tree when you get in touch, especially if it stands in a field corner or behind a locked gate. We also cover Talybont-on-Usk, Libanus, Sennybridge and Llanfrynach.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →Winter is the usual time, once the leaves have dropped and the tree is dormant, which also makes the branch structure easy to read. Some species prefer other times, so tell us what you have and we will suggest the right window.
Yes. We can cut back overhanging limbs and reduce the crown so it clears the lane, wall or fence. We will explain what needs to come off, and if the tree needs more than pruning, we will tell you honestly.
Done properly, no. Pruning cuts made at the right point and the right time heal well. Harm comes from removing too much at once or leaving ragged stubs, so we take off only what the tree can cope with and plan larger jobs in stages.
