Pontypool sits on the edge of the Brecon Beacons with Pontypool Park and the Folly Tower above the town, and many gardens here run up or down a slope. Trees on that kind of ground need pruning thoughtfully. We thin and shape them so they stay balanced and let more light through to the house and the garden.
Our approach is simple: look at the tree, work out the least that will do the job, and make every cut count. That keeps the tree healthy and looking natural, and it means you are not left with a ragged outline in Pontypool for the next few seasons.

On a hillside plot a tree can lean toward the light or the open side, and over time that makes it lopsided. We look at the whole shape before touching anything. Easing back a heavy branch on the leaning side and thinning the other can even the crown up, which helps spread the weight and keeps the tree looking in proportion with the garden.
Access is part of the job too. Steps, retaining walls and narrow paths between terraces in Pontypool mean we cannot always bring things close, so we plan how cut branches will come down and how they will be carried out. That way lawns, beds and neighbouring fences are not damaged while we work, and nothing is left behind once we have finished.

Pontypool has older cottages and terraces alongside newer homes, and the trees reflect that. In the older gardens you tend to meet tall, mature trees, where the priority is deadwood, rubbing branches and crowded growth that blocks light from the house windows. In newer gardens the trees are often younger, and light formative pruning keeps them in good shape from the start.
Fruit trees and ornamentals get timing suited to the species, and we steer clear of the nesting season. Conifers are only cut within their living green growth. They do not regrow from old bare wood, so cutting into brown stems would leave a permanent gap, and we would rather advise on a gentler reduction that the tree can recover from over a season or two.
Where a garden backs onto woodland, we pay attention to what is on the other side of the fence, and we check with the council whether any tree in Pontypool has a protection order before we cut it. We also cover Griffithstown, Blaenavon, Trevethin and Cwmbran. When the work is done we cut up and take away the branches, leaving the garden tidy.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Pontypool.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →Yes. Slopes and steps slow things down and need planning, but we work around them. We lower cut branches carefully, protect your lawn and beds where we can, and carry the waste out so the garden is left clear.
Sometimes. Reducing weight on the leaning side and thinning the crown can ease the load, but a lean can also point to a deeper problem. If we think the tree needs more than pruning, we will say so honestly.
Often yes, and doing both in one visit can be tidier. We need to be careful about birds nesting in either, so timing is the main thing. We will tell you when the work can sensibly go ahead.
