Pontypool stretches up from the park towards the edge of the Brecon Beacons, and its gardens follow the hill. Some lawns lean away from the house, others sit in the shade of wooded slopes, and many are simply tiring to mow. Artificial grass can turn an awkward patch into a level, green space, and we build it on a base made to handle sloping, damp ground.
We always look at the garden before suggesting a plan. Older terraces and newer houses need different things, and the right answer depends on levels, drainage and how you use the space. You will get plain advice, including when a different approach would suit the plot better.

The housing in Pontypool is a mix, and the gardens vary with it. Older hillside terraces often have long, steep back lawns with little room to move a mower. Newer homes tend to have flatter, tidier plots, though the ground can be compacted and poorly drained. We treat each differently, and explain why when we visit. Both can end up with a lawn that is easy to keep.
Wooded slopes close to town drop leaves into gardens and keep corners in shade through much of the year. Moss and bare patches follow. Artificial grass avoids both, although it still needs sweeping in autumn. On a steep section, we may suggest terracing a level area for the turf and planting the bank. That keeps the hillside stable and the lawn usable.

We start by lifting the old turf and roots. The soil is dug out to the depth the sub-base requires, and the base is laid and compacted in layers. A weed membrane then covers it, topped by a thin levelling layer that is compacted again until the surface is flat and firm underfoot. We check it with a level before moving on.
After that the turf is cut to your Pontypool garden, laid with the pile in one direction and the seams joined tidily. We fix the edges along firm edging and brush the fibres up. Drainage is considered at every stage, since water running down a hillside needs a clear route and not a hollow to settle in. Everything is cleared away afterwards.
Care is easy: a stiff brush now and then, a rinse for spills and a sweep when leaves fall. We also work in Griffithstown, Trevethin and Blaenavon, as well as Pontypool, so if you are nearby, get in touch and we will arrange a visit to look at the garden and talk through the options. Just ask. We are glad to help.

Artificial grass suits small, shady or well-used gardens that are tiresome to mow, provided it is laid on a properly prepared, well-drained base.

How long artificial grass lasts depends on the product, the base beneath it, how heavily it is used and how well it is looked after.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →On moderate gradients we can cut and level the ground, then build a stable base. On very steep banks we may suggest terracing or keeping planting there. We look at the slope in person and tell you what will work.
Often it is, since shade is the main reason lawns fail there. Artificial grass does not need light to stay green. You will get leaf fall from nearby trees, so the surface needs sweeping, and we can prune overhanging branches too.
Sometimes. Soil on newer plots can be compacted or hold water, so we check how it drains before we build the base. We may dig deeper or add extra sub-base so the surface does not stay wet or sink.
