Two photos show a Pontypool garden on a hillside with a wide view over rooftops towards the hills. In the first, a man on a ladder works at the face of a big purple-leaved tree. In the second, the same tree has a flat-topped, squared-off crown and cuttings are cleared.
The first photo shows the tree before it is finished, the outer foliage shaggy and rounded and a ladder leaning against it from a small patio. In the second photo the crown has been trimmed to a boxy shape on a clean trunk, with a trimmer and chainsaw on the lawn. Trees pruned like this need regular cutting to keep their form.
The garden sits above the houses below, with a steep path, a retaining wall and a gate between levels. Ladders on uneven ground need extra care, so we set up on the flat patio and keep tools on the lawn. Pruning at the wrong time of year can harm some trees, so it is worth agreeing the season before work begins.
