Gardens in Abertillery are rarely flat. Long terraced streets climb the sides of the Ebbw Fach valley, the back gardens are small and sloping, and the wooded hillside is never far away. A tree in that setting soon becomes a big presence. We prune garden trees to shape, thin heavy growth and remove deadwood, keeping each one in proportion with the space around it.
Most of our pruning here is about trees that have simply got ahead of a small plot: an overgrown ornamental, a fruit tree nobody has touched for years, or a conifer that has started to block the light from a kitchen window.

When a tree stands in a small terraced garden, a few overhanging branches can darken the whole yard and press against neighbouring fences. Abertillery gardens often step up the slope, so we think carefully about where branches will fall and how to lower them in controlled sections rather than letting them drop. The aim is a smaller, lighter tree that still looks like itself.
We do not top trees or hack them into stumps. Crown reduction means shortening the longer limbs back to suitable side branches, so the tree keeps a natural outline and heals well over the following seasons. Thinning removes crowded or crossing growth and lets daylight and air move through, which matters on damp, shaded valley slopes where moss and decay take hold quickly, so a more open crown really does help.

The mountain weather above Abertillery can be harsh, and a tree carrying dead or split branches is more likely to shed them in a gale. Removing deadwood and weak, rubbing limbs is a simple way to make a tree safer and tidier. We will also tell you if a tree has a problem that pruning alone cannot solve, such as a split trunk or advanced decay, so you can decide what to do next.
Fruit trees and ornamentals need pruning at the right time of year, often in winter, and we plan the work around that. Conifers are different, because they will not regrow from old bare wood. If yours has outgrown its spot, we reduce it only within the green growth, never back to the brown, and explain plainly what is realistic for the space you have, including when replanting makes more sense.
Tight lanes and steep steps are normal around Abertillery, so please mention how we get to the tree when you ask. We bring the right kit for awkward access and carry cuttings out ourselves rather than leaving them on your path. We steer clear of the nesting season where we can. We also work in Brynithel, Cwmtillery, Blaina and Six Bells.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →Usually yes. We can reduce the crown and thin the canopy so more light reaches your windows and garden while the tree keeps its natural shape. If the tree is too large for a small plot to ever work, we will say so honestly.
Yes. We cut the branches down into manageable pieces, carry them out and clear the garden, steps and path before we leave. If you would like to keep some logs, tell us beforehand and we will leave them stacked.
Often it is, but we avoid taking too much in one go because that can shock the tree and encourage weak new shoots. We usually spread heavy work over more than one season and remove deadwood and crossing branches first.
