Abertillery's long terraced streets climb the wooded sides of the Ebbw Fach valley, and back gardens are often small, steep and hard to reach. When a tree in one of them dies, starts to lean or simply gets too big, getting it down safely takes thought. Our tree felling in Abertillery is planned around the slope, the weather and whatever stands beneath the tree.
We will visit, look at the tree and explain what we would do before anything is agreed. If you would rather keep the tree and have it reduced instead, we can talk about that too, and we will say if we think it is the better option.

On a typical hillside plot in Abertillery, there is rarely space to fell a tree in one piece. Walls, steps, sheds and neighbouring houses are close, and the ground falls away. So we climb and dismantle the tree from the top down, lowering each piece on ropes and carrying the wood out by hand if there is no vehicle route to the back garden.
Dead and diseased trees need extra care because the wood can be brittle, and weather on the valley sides can loosen roots on a bank. We check the lean, the base and the soil before any cutting starts, and we avoid leaving heavy loose timber on a slope. If we think another approach, such as reducing the tree, is better than felling, we will say so.

We ask you to check with Blaenau Gwent council whether your tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a conservation area, since protected trees cannot be felled without consent. If the tree is near a boundary, speak to the neighbour as well. In Abertillery, where gardens run close together, a short conversation early on avoids disputes over who owns the tree and where the wood will come down.
We also look out for nesting birds, overhead lines and the sensible route for removing timber. Afterwards, the stump can be left cut low or ground out by arrangement, the timber is logged, and green waste is taken away. The garden is swept before we go, which matters on a steep plot where loose debris can wash downhill in the next heavy rain.
Mountain weather brings strong winds and heavy rain, and trees on exposed valley sides can fail. If a tree has come down or is leaning dangerously over a house or road in Abertillery, we can treat it as an emergency, make it safe and clear it. We also cover Cwmtillery, Blaina, Brynithel and Six Bells. Please tell us if a tree is moving.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Abertillery.

Often you can fell a garden tree freely, but protected trees and larger amounts of timber need checks first, and this guide explains who to ask.

Taking a tree down should rarely be the first choice, but sometimes it is the only responsible one, and knowing which situation you are in saves worry.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes. We climb and take it down in sections, lowering the pieces carefully so the house, walls and neighbours are not at risk. We look at the access on the first visit and explain how we will remove the wood.
First check who owns the land, since the bank may not be yours. If it is, we can look at the tree and the slope together. If it belongs to someone else, you will need their permission before any felling takes place.
Either is possible. The stump can be left cut low, which suits steep or awkward plots where a grinder cannot get in, or ground out by arrangement where access allows. We will talk through the choice with you.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
