Merthyr Tydfil is a large valley town, with terraces climbing the hillsides, the Brecon Beacons rising to the north and some very big boundary trees in older gardens. When one of those trees needs to come down, we deal with it carefully, taking it in sections or in one piece depending on the space around it.
We remove dead, diseased, leaning and storm-damaged trees, along with unwanted shrubs and conifers. Tell us about your tree and we will visit to see what the job involves. Photographs are useful, but we always like to see the tree itself in Merthyr before agreeing how to tackle it.

Older gardens in Merthyr Tydfil often hold trees far bigger than anyone planned for. A boundary beech, ash or sycamore can overshadow a whole garden, drop heavy limbs onto the neighbour's roof or lift a wall with its roots. Trees this size are dismantled from the top, lowering each limb and trunk section on ropes. Trees of this size also hold a lot of weight, so every cut is planned.
Doing it this way is slower than dropping the tree whole, but it is the safe way when the houses stand close together. Before we start we look closely for dead wood, hollows and splits, because those change how the tree behaves once the weight starts to come off it. If a tree is too hazardous to climb, we will tell you honestly and discuss what else can be done.

Hillside gardens in Merthyr can be reached only by steps or a narrow back lane, and the cut timber has to travel the same way. We plan this on the first visit so there are no surprises on the day. Tell us if there are parking restrictions near the house, as that affects where we can stand the vehicle. Hillside plots in Merthyr Tydfil make that planning especially useful.
We also check whether a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area covers the tree, because permission from the council may be needed first. The job may be nearer Dowlais, Treharris, Troedyrhiw or Pontsticill, all of which we cover, and the checks are the same wherever it is. If the garden has an unusually awkward approach, a photograph of the route helps. Ask if you are unsure.
Once the tree is down we log the timber and remove the green waste, and your Merthyr Tydfil garden is left clear. The stump can be cut low or ground out by arrangement, depending on whether you want to plant, lay a patio or just tidy up. If you want some of the logs for a stove, say so beforehand and we will stack them neatly.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Merthyr Tydfil.

Often you can fell a garden tree freely, but protected trees and larger amounts of timber need checks first, and this guide explains who to ask.

Taking a tree down should rarely be the first choice, but sometimes it is the only responsible one, and knowing which situation you are in saves worry.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →We climb it and take it down in sections, lowering each piece on ropes to a cleared spot. That keeps neighbouring roofs, fences and walls safe. We look closely at the tree beforehand to decide the order of cuts.
Only if the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area. We check this with the council before booking, and we tell you what we find before any work begins. If it is protected, we explain what the council needs.
Yes, by arrangement. The stump can be ground out, or left cut low if you prefer. Grinding suits a spot you want to build on or replant, while a low stump is fine if the space will not be used.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
