This photograph shows a large, cone-shaped conifer in a Bridgend back garden before felling. It rises well above the neighbouring rooflines, with its trunk close to a dark fence and a decked seating area. A chainsaw is already on the decking in the foreground, ready for the job.

The conifer has dense yellow-green foliage right down to the fence line, so the trunk is mostly hidden. Dark painted fences surround the garden, and the neighbouring houses sit close by. In front of the tree are a patio table, chairs, a plant pot and a blue tarpaulin over something on the left. Because the tree is so close to the fence and the garden furniture, there is very little room to drop it whole.
With a tree this size, so near to boundaries, the usual approach is to take it down in sections from the top, lowering each piece rather than dropping it. The branches are then chipped or cut up and taken away. Before any cutting, it is worth checking with the council for a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area, and looking for nesting birds. The stump can be left cut low or ground out by arrangement.
