Pontypridd sits where two rivers meet and the streets climb the hillsides on both sides. Back gardens there are often long, narrow and sloping, so a patio is not just a matter of laying slabs. It needs a plan for levels, steps and water. A neat, solid patio makes a real difference there.
We build patios that suit those conditions: a properly dug and compacted base, paving laid with a fall and neat edges all round. If you have been putting up with a muddy or uneven patch behind the house, this is how to fix it for good.

Many Pontypridd houses are in terraces with a modest back garden that rises away from the house. In a space like that, a small patio close to the back door can make the whole garden more useful. We keep the footprint sensible and leave room for access along the side, so nothing feels squeezed. Even a small area, laid properly, gives you a clean place for a table, a clothes line or children to play out of the mud.
Access can be tight, so we plan how materials get in and how waste gets out before we start. Where the ground steps up, we can build a clean edge or a couple of steps so the patio and the lawn behind it each have their own level and neither washes into the other. Neither the steps nor the edge need to be elaborate, just firm and square.

We dig out to firm ground, compact a sub-base in layers and lay the slabs on a bed with a slight fall away from the house. On a hillside plot in Pontypridd, that fall matters, because water arriving from higher up needs somewhere to go that is not your back door. Compaction in thin layers gives the base a dense, even feel so it does not shift once slabs are on top of it.
We check levels throughout instead of only at the end, so the finished surface is flat to walk on and runs off as intended. Joints are pointed afterwards and the cuts around walls, drains and steps are made with care. Spoil and old material then leave with us, so the garden is clear. The finish should be tidy from the house to the furthest corner.
Porcelain, sandstone-look slabs and natural stone each have their strengths in a damp valley setting. Some stay cleaner, some give a more natural look. Wooded slopes nearby can bring shade and leaf litter, which is worth thinking about when choosing. We also cover Treforest, Taffs Well and Rhydyfelin, so everything around Pontypridd is within easy reach. Samples can be brought to you.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Often it is. A compact paved area by the door gives you somewhere dry and level to sit, and it keeps mud out of the house. We size it so there is still space left for planting or a short lawn.
We check access when we visit. Slabs and sub-base material can be carried through or along the side of the house if there is no other way, and we plan the delivery and removal so that the job runs without fuss.
Quite often, yes. Where the level changes between the patio and the rest of the garden, steps or a retaining edge keep it safe and stop soil moving. We work out what is needed once we have measured the slope properly.
