This Weston-super-Mare job is shown part way through. The photo captures a tree beside a cul-de-sac road with its branches cut back to short stubs and a few leafy shoots left, a ladder against the trunk, cut branches in the foreground and several trimmers and a saw lying on the tarmac.

The tree has been cut back to its main framework, with thick stubs held out like fingers at the top and some foliage left lower down. This kind of heavy cutting is a form of crown reduction or pollarding and it suits some trees better than others. Done well, it keeps a tree in scale with the houses, and new shoots usually grow from the cut ends.
The photo shows why working by the road needs thought: branches have fallen across the tarmac and a verge, and tools are set out within reach. We keep the cut material together, chip or load it, and sweep up before leaving. Because this is a hard cut, it is worth asking in advance how the tree will look in the first year.
