Two photos tell this Swindon story. One shows a tall, slender tree wrapped in ivy, its upper branches bare against the sky, beside a freshly laid patio. The other shows a cut-down stump at the foot of a timber fence, still dressed in ivy, with chippings and patio slabs lying around it.

Ivy can hide a lot. The thick green column in the first photo is hard to read, and the thin branches at the top carry no leaves, which can point to a tree in decline, though from a photo we cannot say what was wrong with it. Because the garden is small and the patio is newly laid, a tree like this is normally taken down in pieces from the top rather than felled in one go.
The second photo shows the stump cut low to the ground, with fresh pale wood on top and ivy still climbing around the sides. Leaving a stump cut low is common, and it can be ground out by arrangement if the space is needed. Ivy that remains on the fence will carry on growing, so it is worth deciding at the start whether it should be cleared too.
