This photo from Ogmore-by-Sea catches work in progress on a tall boundary hedge. One of us is up at the top edge and another is working lower down, on a sunny day, beside a bank of yellow-flowered shrub that was left well alone.

Hedges of this height are cut from the top, and the cut line is set first so the rest follows it. The face on the right is already squared and dense, while the shrub in front is simply being worked around. On sloping ground like this, each person has to judge where they are standing.
A flowering shrub right next to a hedge is easily damaged by falling clippings, so we pull it aside or lay sheets under the hedge. Summer is a busy time for birds, so we look through the hedge for nests before cutting. Where there is one, that stretch is left until the young have gone, and we come back for it later.
