Large Hedge Cutting in Pontypridd

This Pontypridd project is a big one: a dense conifer hedge running along a corner plot, standing well above the fence, the parked cars and the garage beside it. The photos were taken while the work was under way, so you can see the hedge at full height, the ladder and chipper in use, and the cuttings coming off the top and sides.

What a hedge this size involves

A hedge this tall cannot be dealt with from the ground alone. The photos show a ladder set against the face, a long-reach trimmer for the upper sections and a petrol saw lying on the road for any thicker branches that hand tools will not cut. Working in stages keeps the line even, because the top and sides are taken back together rather than one face at a time.

Conifer hedges like this are cut into the green growth only. They do not reliably sprout again from bare brown wood, so the cut has to stop where the leafy foliage ends. You can see brown patches inside this hedge, which is why a careful, shallow cut matters more than a hard cut back.

Clearing up beside a road

This hedge sits right beside a pavement and a junction, so the cuttings are dealt with as the work goes on rather than left until the end. The photos show a tipper truck with a wood chipper hitched behind it, branches fed straight into the chipper and the chippings landing in the tipper body. Less bulk on the road means less to sweep up afterwards.

Roadside work also needs some planning. Parking space, passing traffic and pedestrians all have to be allowed for, and a wet day like the one in these pictures makes surfaces slippery for ladders and boots. Before any hedge is cut we also check for nesting birds, and we leave a section alone if there are signs of an active nest.
