This Chepstow job is a back garden with a lawn, a stone patio and a pale green summerhouse. A large, rounded evergreen shrub stands at the end of the lawn, tall enough that it was trimmed from a ladder. The first photo shows it before the work and the second shows it after.

A shrub this size grows into a solid dome, and the top of it is out of reach from the ground. The ladder in the photos is how the top was reached, with a long-reach hedge trimmer used to cut it back. A shrub like this is best cut back evenly all round, so the shape stays balanced and the growth stays tight to the plant.
In the second photo the shrub is lower and flatter on top, and the lawn is covered in fresh cuttings. A good deal of material comes off a shrub of this size, and clearing the cuttings from the lawn is part of the job. The long-reach trimmer is still on the grass in the photo.
Check for nesting birds before cutting a thick evergreen in spring or early summer, and leave any section where there is an active nest. A ladder needs firm, level ground, so a lawn that is soft after rain can be worth waiting out. Get in touch with a few photos of your own shrub or hedge and we will tell you what the job involves.
