A large tree on a grassed corner of a Thornhill housing estate in Cardiff, reduced in size. The two photos below show the tree before the work, with the ladder against it and the chipper at the kerb, and the lighter tree afterwards with the cut wood on the grass.

Reducing a tree means taking it back in size rather than taking it out. The cuts are made to shorten the branches so the crown comes back to a smaller, lighter shape, and the tree stays standing. In the second photo the crown is noticeably lighter and more open than the full, heavy shape in the first.
This tree stands on a grassed corner beside the road, with houses close by and parked cars nearby, so the cut branches had to be brought down with care and the work kept tidy. The ladder in the first photo gives access to the crown, and the cut wood in the second photo is on the grass, ready to be cleared.
The orange wood chipper is set up beside the road in both photos. Branches go straight through it, which keeps the grass and the pavement clear of large piles and means there is less to carry away at the end of the job.
